Project: Special Needs Multisensory Environment

Location: Hope School, Wigan

Date Completed: Ongoing

Client: Hope School

Lighting Architect/Designer: Lee Engineering Ltd.

Hope School in Wigan have recently added a new sensory classroom and Lee Engineering were chosen to provide an AV solution. Using the equipment listed below, we designed a highly interactive environment which is controlled via a central touchscreen. A custom built wall mounted touchpad was designed to allow the pupils to change lighting programs by simply touching a coloured pad. Simplicity of control was the most important aspect of this project and so the touchscreen was designed with a What Do You Want Do system to allow simple control of all aspects of the system. 1 button can lead to many actions eg projector power up, video routing, audio routing.

Also at Hope School, the hydrotherapy pool was recently refurbished to bring the lighting and audio system up to date. The lighting system was changed for a number of LED wall washers and in pool submersible LED fittings. Again a custom designed wall touchpad allows the lights to be controlled safely by occupants with wet hands. Capacative switches were used so that the panel does not even need to be touched to change the lighting, simple proximity of a hand to a coloured square is all that is required. All lighting units are low voltage, thus ensuring safety in the pool environment. Audio is handled by 2 x Bose 502 speakers controlled via custom wall controls.

Hope School has also refurbished their Performance Studio. Lee Engineering provided a lighting system based around 8 x Thomas Pixel Line Micro's and an audio system based around 4 x Bose 203 speakers and 2 x Bose MB2 subs. The lighting is again controlled by custom designed wall touch pads, with the facility to plug in a standard lighting desk for more complex control. Audio processing is via the BiAmp systems Nexia PM and a further custom designed was panel with 8 x LED on/off switched for mic and line inputs plus master out and 8 x faders to control volume level.

All of the panels discussed above were designed and machined in house on our CNC machine.
